Running time and the sound of the record matter before the colour. Share the complete programme and discuss the format, speed and allocation across sides with the production team. A side should be planned as an audio programme, not only as a list of track names.
Format, weight, colour and packaging all affect the edition. We help bring the creative direction and production requirements together before the specification is approved.
Prepare a master for vinyl
A streaming master is not automatically a manufacturing master for vinyl. Work with your audio engineer on the required files and follow the specifications supplied for the pressing process. Confirm the final track order, side names and durations.
A test pressing, where part of the agreed process, is an audio check. It is separate from the visual artwork proof. Set aside time for listening and make clear who can approve the result.
Design the sleeve as an object
Think about the outer sleeve, spine, inner sleeve, centre labels and any insert. A gatefold or additional booklet gives you more space, but changes the production and assembly requirements.
Request the exact templates before finishing the artwork. Check bleed, safe areas, image resolution and text size. Colour on screen does not by itself define the final print result; special colours and finishes must be specified.
Keep the calendar realistic
Vinyl production involves audio preparation, cutting or mastering stages, manufacturing, print, packing and transport. The sequence and lead time depend on the chosen process and current production conditions.
Tell us the stock arrival deadline as well as the public release date. Minimum quantities, options and timing are confirmed in your quote. If a release also includes clothing or objects, plan each component and the final assembly together.
From a record to a collector’s edition
A strong edition can connect the sleeve, textile, print and objects through one visual direction. Merchly can study a record and its accompanying merchandise as a coherent collection.
We can study colour options for the selected format. Feasibility, minimum quantities, appearance and lead times must be confirmed for the production process.
When should we finish the artwork?
After receiving the correct production templates, and early enough for proofing and revisions before print approval.
Are the test pressing and artwork proof the same check?
No. A test pressing checks the audio; the artwork proof checks the printed design. Each needs a clear approval.
